Mayan Porphecy in 21st Centuary

21st of December 2012... What is going to happen...???

But one thing I can say for sure. This World didn't appear / got created all of a sudden in this Universe ; it took ages and ages. So according to the Newton's 3rd Motion Law, if it is going to get destroyed... then it will also happen in the same way...!!!
In my point of view, we may face some or many unbelievable threats & severe disasters in the upcoming years; but not the end of the time.

TSUNAMI & 2012 World's End

Yesterday, a tsunami alert was given to 28 countries after a severe earth quake and some strong aftershocks occurred some miles inside the sea near the shore of Indonesia's Sumatra Island.

According to the US Geological Survey it is said that 8.7-magnitude quake hit 431 km's off the city of Banda Aceh at 6.38pm AEST, and was followed by another undersea quake measured at 8.2.

Panicky residents from the place and other nearby countries poured into the streets, after feeling the shock and hearing the warning ( 9.1-magnitude quake in 2004 that unleashed an Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 220,000 people including 170,000 in Aceh province ).

http://ptwc.weather.gov/

Yesterday's earthquake was felt as far afield as Thailand, where skyscrapers in the capital Bangkok swayed. India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Reunion Island, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Burma all issued alerts or evacuation orders which were later lifted after some hours of time.

Small tsunamis hit Indonesia and Thailand, with waves of up to 80cm in Aceh, but there were no reports of damage or casualties. Even Eastern Srilanka and Southern India felt the same effects.

And the simple concept of tsunami is, whenever there is an earthquake under the sea it doesn't mean that there's going to be tsunami coming on. If it is severe one, then there is a high possibility only; that's all, no 100% confirm at all.

Is this going to be the end of our World...???

We'll wait and see how 2012 passes by...

SL Universities - BEST in Asia, but in World...???

Recent rankings (2012) show that some of the SriLankan Universities are able to achieve very good positions in the South Asian region.

They have been ranked among the best in the list of South Asian University category, as reported by international grading of universities. According to the ranking Webometrics of World Universities in selecting the ‘Top 100 universities in South Asia in the 2012’, Colombo University is in the 8th place.
It is the highest position achieved by any Srilankan Universities. So consequently the achievement of Sri Lankan Universities should be celebrated.

University                                                                Ranking
  •   University of Colombo                  (UOC)                   08
  •   University of Peradeniya             (UOP)                   23
  •   University of Moratuwa               (UOM)                   50
  •   University of Sri Jayewardenepura   (USJP)                     61
  •   University of Kelaniya                          (UOK)                      98
  •
So are we on the track that leads to 'SL as a knowledge hub' ...?!?

Where are we in the World...??

Why we are so behind...???

How they rank the local Universities ?

Different ranking methods have been applied in the globe. The Webometrics ranking is actually targeting to promote Web publication. Certain measurements have been used in this ranking consists of supporting Open Access initiatives, electronic access to scientific publications and to other academic material. This ranking has a larger coverage (in terms of universities) than other similar rankings.

It is important to understand the measurement used by TIMES rankings (with data supplied by Thomson Reuters Corp.). They employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching, research to knowledge transfer.

These 13 elements are brought together into 5 headline categories, which are:

  • Teaching - the learning environment (worth 30 % of the overall ranking score).
  • Research - volume, income and reputation (worth 30 %).
  • Citations - research influence (30 %).
  • Industry income - innovation (2.5 %).
  • International outlook - staff, students and research (7.5 %)

It is important to note that 60 % has been allocated for ‘research and citations’. Sri Lankan universities have not touched upon this particular area properly.

According to TIMES rankings California Institute of Technology, ranked as #1  is followed by Harvard and Stanford in US.
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay is the only South Asian university ranked among top 400 universities in the world. The same university is ranked as number two in South Asia under the ranking of Webometrics.

Furthermore Prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) can also be considered as one of the rankings which have been accepted in the world. But not a single Indian University represents South Asia in the first list of top 200.
As the methodology of QS six indicators are drawn together to form an international ranking of universities -

1.    Academic reputation (from global survey) – 40 %
2.    Employee reputation (from global survey) – 10 %
3.    Scopus citations per faculty – 20 %
4.    Faculty-Student ratio – 20 %
5.    Proportion of international student –  5 %
6.    Proportion of international faculty –  5%

Accordingly the University of Cambridge, ranked number 1 among the world in this ranking, is followed by Harvard (US) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US).

It is apparent that certain rankings used by different Institutes are diverse. It is a duty for Sri Lankan authorities to understand different rankings and prepare certain standards for our national universities. University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka can introduce such a formula (by benchmarking one of the above methods) to rank our universities. The competition within the sector for better rankings will bring Sri Lanka into the world map in terms of quality of education in the future.

This can be used to grade foreign universities and private institutes that are operating in Sri Lanka as well. The technique will provide them some targets not only in terms of profit but for the contribution for research and development of the country. As in the private sector striving to obtain quality standards like the ISO, there should be preparations for each university by appointing a special task force consisting of respective authorities.

Sri Lanka is famous as a country with a higher literacy rate, which is above 90%. So there should be a proper framework and strategies for the country to move forward in higher education and to make our homeland as the 'miracle of the Asia'.

Mother INDIA Voted Against her Child, SL....!!!

As most of us know that, INDIA the supreme power in the subcontinent region was one of the main countries which helped Sri Lankan Government to end the civil war which took place for more than 26 years, by providing all the means.

Since the end of the civil war against Tamil freedom fighters ( better known as LTTE ), when ever Sri Lanka was facing any issue in front of the International Politics, India was the prime country who supported all the way.

But then...
things got changed until that was published....

Then how come mother, turned up against her baby...???

Just a photo which was shown in Channel-4, two days back of the voting day changed the minds of the Indian leaders.

So  INDIA,  the major counterpart of SriLanka, voted in favour of the US-backed resolution (based on alleged war crimes that took place during the final war) on Thursday, 22nd of March 2012, in the United Nations Human Rights Council of 47 members , in Geneva;  24 countries voted in favour, 15 against and 8 abstaining.

IPL - Success to Failure...?!?

   Once again IPL ...

Yesterday, 3rd of April 2012,  5th Indian Premier League (IPL) began in Chennai where Bollywood superstars Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and American pop sensation Katy Perry were the highlights of a lengthy opening ceremony of the fifth  IPL, which failed to live up to its high expectations on Tuesday night despite the huge glamour quotient.

Although there was no dearth of star power with megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Prabhu Deva attending the opening nite, it still drew a lacklustre response from the nearly 15,000 spectators who had gathered at the YMCA College of Physical Education.

Even the attempts by the organizers to cheer up the crowd failed to enthuse the audience who were subjected to a typical Bollywood style entertainment but without much verve and spirit.

Major issue is, DLF is not keen on investing any more in IPL. The title sponsor DLF is considering pulling out from the next years' IPL.
As we know earlier this year BCCI faced similar sort of problem with Sahara Company's Sponsorship to Indian National Cricket Team.

And this time only 9 teams are participating, where Kochi Tuskers who played fighting game were kicked out of this time, due to going up above the tournament rules and regulations.

Even in the past IPL's, some players got banned due to their misbehave and misconduct of IPL laws, as well as some country players were not granted permission to participate in the IPL series even. There were many senior and junior cricketers who were not bought by any team.

During the recent past, IPL faced  many issues related to Lalit Kumar Modi, the former Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League and the former Chairman of the Champions League, who was the in-charge for the first 3 IPL tournaments (2008 to 2010),  regarding the team bidding process, auctions, misusing the mishandling the the properties and match fixing.

In 2008, Lalit Modi was instrumental in launching the Indian Premier League (IPL), and was one of the architects of this Twenty20 cricket league. He also engineered the Indian Premier League's move to South Africa in 2009 after the dates of the tournament clashed with the Indian general election.

The commercial success of the Indian Premier League and Modi's control of the league has led to him being compared to Don King and Bernie Ecclestone, and once he was adjudged as the 2nd most powerful person in Indian Sports.

This supremo power made him to do illegal acts with the aid of money and authority.

In 2010, Modi oversaw the bidding process and creation of two new teams in the Indian Premier League. Pune and Kochi were declared the new franchises. A Twitter entry by Modi declaring the stakeholders of the Kochi IPL Team allegedly breaching confidentiality agreements led to the resignation of the then Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Dr. Shashi Tharoor.

Modi was then suspended as Chairman and Commissioner of the IPL in April 2010. A suspension notice and a 34-page letter stating 22 charges of impropriety were served via email to Modi. He publicly protested his innocence immediately after the 2010 Indian Premier League Final had been played.

An income tax department report on Modi has revealed that he holds a silent stake in three IPL teams - the Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab.

Furthermore, there are questions as to whether Modi was involved in match fixing and betting in Indian Premier League games. He is also under fire for helping his family and friends buy stakes in Indian Premier League teams.

In March 2012 New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns successfully sued Modi for libel, after Modi posted on Twitter in 2010 that Cairns had been involved in match-fixing during 2008. Cairns won costs and damage.

And when we look at the advertising and marketing side, upto yesterday 40% of ad slots on SET Max, the official broadcaster for IPL, remains unsold...!!!

Bollywood, which in the past had been avoiding releasing movies during the IPL season, is shedding its cricket phobia and clearly going out with 22 film releases during the 5th leagues' 2 month schedule.

So it is clear that IPL is facing so many major problems and no longer as hot as it used to be...!!!

But the organizers and BCCI denied any crisis.

“I don’t think there is any cricket fatigue. Everything is fine and response to everything is great. The answer will come once the tournament gets underway.” said Sundar Raman, CEO, IPL.

Even in the first clash of this season that took place in Chennai today, between home team Chennai Super Kings who are the current champions and power-house Mumbai Indians was witnessed by the audience who filled only the 2/3rd of the stadium seats. So this clearly indicates the authority that the popularity of the league has started shading dramatically.

Though since 2007/08, IPL has grown into one of the world's biggest sports, worth over US$ 4 billion, it is hard to predict what is going to happen to IPL in future.

But, definitely its not going to be a 'MONEY GAME'
any more... !!!
